What do you think of when you hear the words silly hick, mountain folk, hillbillies, southern good old boys, and country bumpkins ? Dick and the Deer Gutters visually embrace these stereotypes
to become a well thought out concept of a rock band. They look like a bunch of poor, dirty, silly, and maybe scary inbred hicks or farm boys (or girls -Edith Dick on drums ???). They seem to be from deep - deep - deep back part of the woods, playing music they describe as "Psychobilly." Looking at the cover of their new CD LUV HICKEY, I would hate to be caught alone by myself in the back of the barn or the woods with these dudes. I bet that Sheep fear these guys too. (I know, Baaaaaaad joke).

Dick and the Deer Gutters CD titled LUV HICKEY, copyright 2011, is what Original Music Reviews received via US Postal Service along with a note from "the Choogler." (You too can submit your original Copyrighted 1 - 3 songs to: ORIGINAL MUSIC REVIEWS P.O. BOX 495 LEVITTOWN, PA USA 19058 please include bio & contact email address) I had trouble reading the scribble of writing on the letter (I guess that it was in English) but who's going to complain ? I don't want to be hunted down by a deer gutter named "the Choogler." I did have one problem before I could start to review the music; 12 songs are too many to review in detail per post. I emailed Dick and the Deer Gutters to ask them which ones to review. The Choogler emailed me back (I guess even the old country people have computers, now) and told me to review track #3 SPILL MY LOVE and track #4 FOOL. Here is my opinion about these songs :

SPILL MY LOVE - is a two-step danceable, almost honky tonk (without the piano) ballad. Musically the song is simple and the musicianship come across just like the characters on the front cover of the CD Luv Hickey. Loose, raw, and grubby. I could not get a feeling if they were intentionally, as a band, playing down to the level of their characters. Any song that starts with the crack open of a can of beer, can't be that bad. I just kept wondering if someone in the band used his or her last tooth to open it. The lyrics gave me a nice chuckle about a horny hick trying to hook up, at a bar, at the end of the night. The lyrics are a raunchy brand of humor. Picture Howard Stern in junior high school telling a girl : "Let me Spill My Love all over you" "it's even good for your hair" and when it was all over "sorry about your contact lens." These are the lines that most people over 13 can read between. The vocals are off key and come complete with a slow southern draw twang. The backing vocals were even a step more off key and out of sink like a drunken moonshiner on a row boat in the Pacific Ocean. I think that this tune would be best served cold, when it is the last call, at your local watering hole.

FOOL - This song is about remembering all of the stupid things one says and does when they have a drinking spree blackout. (hmmm, I wonder if this song was written about the last song). This tune has more of a driving upbeat rocKIN tempo to it. Musically Dick and the Deer Gutters seem a little tighter on this track however, at about the 1:50 mark, there is nice music bed with a good pocket for shredding but the lead seems faint. Maybe a missing solo ? The solo could have been punched up on the board a little more or maybe they could have placed dueling guitar solos, if they were going more in the direction of southern blues/rock style. Something musiclly seems missing there. Lead singer has a smidge too much delay for me. Chorus is a bit off of key. I am starting to believe that these guys do this on purpose (OK, I'm slow. It took me two songs. Hell, "Edith Dick" should have given it away in the beginning. Rumor has it, that she is dating an Irishman named Pat MeBalls). The lyrics are more of the junior high type of shenanigans : "she said I took a s--t in her washing machine." (By the look of this band, I wonder if they wrote that line from experience).

In conclusion; based on these two songs, musically the band Dick and the Deer Gutters seem to be as tongue in cheek as the Fun House at the County Fair. You cannot take either seriously. The band doesn't seem to care if you take them seriously. If your looking for one Ye Ole Saturday night of drinking music and you are into get wasted on white lightning (moonshine) until you can't see or smell or hear (or all three), than Dick and the Deer Gutters are for you. Un-fortunately, like consuming massive amounts of home made alcohol, these songs are not safe for frequent everyday consumption. My opinion is that you cannot jam out with them in your car on the way to school or work on a regular basis. That would send you straight to the Funny Farm. Dick and the Deer Gutters may be more fun to see in person than hear on the radio. They seem to be a bunch of Redneck Kin who play with themselves musiclly, all the while playing with the audience instead of for the audience. All in their good time fun "Psychobilly", music maybe an afterthought. A band perfectly made for a fraternity house frat party or a small bar. Many bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (just a different style of rock) started out that way. Are Dick and the Deer Gutters, The Next Big Good Time Band ? Who knows ? Just please keep them away from the poor sheep and your washing machine.
