Closed Minded Ears

ORIGINAL MUSIC REVIEWS

CLOSED MINDED EARS

ARE YOUR EARS MUSICALLY CLOSED MINDED ?
I have noticed a few people on various social media sites, especially Facebook, constantly put up what tunes they are jamming too. Sometimes it is cool to see what old "Classic" Gems they are dusting off and playing. There is nothing wrong with a trip down memory lane once in a while. We all can do it from time to time. What bothers me is when some people don't play anything NEW. In fact, some people don't play anything before the year 2000. I believe that when people's choice of music is limited to the past and they close their ears to the present, they are musically closed minded. Attention to all of you whom I am writing about... I don't care if you "unfollow" "unfriend" "unsubscribe" or "unlike" me or Original Music Reviews... I am calling you out !!

So you say: "They don't make music like they use to..." Funny, years ago, I think that I also heard my Grand Parents say the same thing. The older generation never opened their minds to anything NEWER than 1940's Big Band Music or 1950's Doo Wop Music (depending on their age). Their radio dialed was glued onto one oldie station. They never went out to see any new music artist in concert. Whenever someone from the younger generation played some newer music, granny would say the same thing that you did: "They sure don't make music like they use to." Later granny would add: "what is wrong with their hair and clothes?"

WAKE UP AND HEAR THE MUSIC
Where/when did you look for new original music ? Again, your ears must be closed minded. New music is all around us: from Terrestrial Radio to College Radio and from Satellite Radio to Web Radio. It is played every single weekend at your local bar, club, hall, or tavern. It is displayed and reviewed on countless blogs like www.OriginalMusicReviews.BlogSpot.com (shameless plug) and others. Countless other zines and newspapers have ads promoting Original Bands, Groups, Musicians, Rappers, Singers, and Songwriters. Their flyers clutter up college and store poster boards, telephone poles, and streets inviting you to check original artists out. How about your friend's band? Did you get there just in time to see the band that you wanted then, just as quickly, you leave when their set is over?

New Original Music can be heard live in opening slots on the same concert stage as the nationals. When was the last time you went to a concert and gave the opening act a chance? Most people show up just to see the headliner. Besides missing out on Millions of Unsigned or Inde original music artists in your region, you are also missing out on music by newly risen national original artists like Gaslight Anthem, Ghost, Halestorm, Hunter Hayes or Pop Evil.

If you leave a show early or arrive to a concert late, you maybe missing out on discovering the next big thing in music. Later, when that artist becomes a success you will dare to say: "I saw them BEFORE they became Superstars." Truthfully, you didn't. You were out of the building before their gear was set up on stage. Even if you're a gaming junkie, games will be there for you, anytime of the day or night. Also, you can catch the latest whatever Old Time-Vampire-Comic Book-Mobster-King-Pirate-Kung Foo-Drama Series that you are watching on DVR or On Demand. If you just can't get out of bed before 8 PM or your Mommy punishes you for not being inside the house when the streetlights come on, you've got larger problems.

MAGGOTS, OLD BROKEN RECORDS & THIEVES
Milli Vanilli Bands & Karaoke Clowns also live in the past. I want to be clear of whom I am writing about:  Cover Bands (Karaoke Clowns) & Tribute Bands (Milli Vanilli Bands) are music maggots to original artist's music meat. Marching Bands or Wedding Bands are not. Both Marching Bands and Wedding Bands are full of musicians who serve a good purpose. They are event oriented filled with tradition and spirit. When it comes to Cover Bands; if it hasn't been played on the radio 5,000 times each and every day, for the past 5 - 10 years, they think that all other music must suck. Tribute Bands pretend to be another person or band from the past and have no identity of their own. Both Cover & Tribute Bands have one thing in common: They often get paid by playing songs not created by them but by the real musicians who wrote them. Isn't that stealing? The original artists never see one cent of the money, yet the Cover Bands & Tribute Bands often make fun of newer up and coming original artists.

YOU'RE ONE AND ONLY
. Let's not forget those who are stuck on to one brand of music or another. I am talking to those who say: "I ONLY like Rap..."  "I ONLY like Metal..." "I ONLY like Country or Western." Expand your music horizons. Give other Genres or Styles of original music a chance. Many of today's original artists tend to merge with other genres or styles. KISS is known as "hard rock" band yet they once wrote an original Disco tune. Metallica became "sold out" when they recorded a soft ballad. Hootie and the Blowfish singer DARIUS RUCKER is now on his own as a very successful Country Music singer. Rob Thomas sang tunes with a different feel than Matchbox Twenty and became "Smooth" when he hooked up with Santana and others. There was No Doubt that Gwen Stefani was "Just a girl" before she was an "ain't no Hollaback Girl." These are some examples of original artists who took a risk and gambled to expand their known genre. Many original music artists refuse to be pigeon-held into one category or another. Don't limit your exposure of all that is out there in the music world. Open up your ears.

All that I am suggesting to you, if you are a true "Music Fan," go and check out some NEW ORIGINAL MUSIC. Stop the steady drinking from the music of the past and try something new in the present. You can better yourself. I guarantee that if you would listen and try something new, you will become alive to breathe again. If not, why don't you just do like Vincent van Gogh and cut off your ear so that it may never be stimulated again.

If you live in the past musically, then your ears are closed to the present. I don't know about you, but I like gifts, especially music gifts. Now go and open up the mind of your ears and find the presents that are out there waiting for you.
