ORIGINAL MUSIC BE HEARD
Internet Radio; A New Media
by Alex & Dustin
Internet Radio is NOT your Great-Grand Father's Radio. |
I asked Dustin, co-owner of GasHouseRadio.com, to write a little bit about Internet Radio. Before we get to his thoughts, here are some of my rambling thoughts to add to Dustin's about Internet Radio:
If History repeats itself, I believe that Internet Radio is the next big music media for Original Music since the College Radio heyday.
In the 1990's College Radio DJs played whatever they wanted to, with no corporate oversight, playlist limitations, or regulations outside of the F.C.C. Laws. Today, Internet Radio Stations now have the same luxuries without (as of this moment) Government regulations. As we all know, limited regulations equals freedom to grow and expand.
Back in the early 1990s nobody, and I do mean NOBODY, outside of college radio played music from original groups like Soundgarden, Pantera, or Nirvana. Those bands, and many other underground, unsigned, inde, & smaller label bands, already had songs being played on college radio stations across the USA long before the world embraced "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Before the band Pantera was heard in the sports complexes, in video games, or copied by tribute bands, students at the University of Delaware heard their music being played by the Tink. The Tink, played new (at that time) original music by artists like Pantera , Abolish, and other heavier music on WVUD. Today, when you go on the net, like in past years on the college radio, you will hear new Original Unsigned Artists. Artists like : Hopeless Heroic - rock from UK, Paint Box - rock from Philly, Shinobi Ninja - rap/rock from NY, Toy Soldiers - folk from Philly, & Vertigo Venus - electro rock from NM just to name a few.

Most Internet Stations like GasHouseRadio.com play Unsigned & Independent Music all of the time in rotation. They do a good job of mixing in new up & coming artists from around the world with established icons. If you have some new Original Music send it to them (also send it to us for review see top of page for "how to submit music"). You may just expand your audience and music sales.
The good Internet Stations even provide a chat room in which all listeners can chat or request a song or artist. On the Show
"Pess Smile" (Weekdays from 3pm - 5pm EST on GasHouseRadio.com) Nikki is proud to play all styles & genres of Original Unsigned & Inde Music but she will throw in a classic artist or two like the Rolling Stones, My Chemical Romance, or even some Motown. Nikki will take requests from the chat room and if she has it she will play it (just don't ask her to play the Foo Fighters). Good luck doing that with your local radio station. I challenge you to go into their chat room or call them up and request an unsigned or an inde artist. Even if they had the music, they will not play it because, as Dustin will point out, the "suits" corporate mentality demand that the DJs stick to the playlist given to them.
Like the College Radio Stations in the 1990s, now it is Internet Radio's turn to discover and bring forward the next wave of great Original Music. Because Internet Radio Stations like GasHouseRadio.com are not limited to a few genres of music, ALL styles of new original music including Country, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Metal, and Rock are being played for all to hear. This opens the door to some yet known bands, groups, musicians, or singers in a yet known genre / style to become the next super star. "Mainstream" or "Terrestrial" Radio Stations can have them after they will be discovered FIRST on Internet Radio.

Internet Radio; A New Media
Well, I shouldn’t say “new” because Internet radio has actually been around since 1994. However for the first 15 years of it’s existence it has been left to the hobbyists as sort of a new-age ham radio. Companies like AOL and Yahoo have tried to push the medium over the years, but up until the past few years I have never known anyone to actually listen on a regular basis. That is until Pandora made it’s way on to the scene.
Pandora took a different approach to Internet radio than the traditional radio format. By giving the user pseudo control over what the station is playing, coupled with the advancement in technology, Pandora managed to push through to the top of the Internet radio food chain. Soon after, many other similar Internet-based music options popped up such as Last.fm and Spotify. While these successful companies found their place on the Internet, I don’t see any of them as “Internet radio stations”. They are more of an intuitive music players. So what is Internet radio?
With terrestrial stations performing so poorly due to corporate mentality and regulation suffocation, Internet radio stations have a window of opportunity. The music services listed above are great sometimes, but they lack any sort of human interaction or personality. If I hear a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, there’s no one there when the song is over to tell me when they’re on tour, or a funny story about the recording of that particular album.
Internet radio can set itself apart of both terrestrial radio and the popular streaming music services by getting back to the roots of radio. DJ’s can spin songs that they like, and they can tell you about the song and the band. They can tell you a funny story about the first time they heard that song. And you the listener can interact with that DJ via social media tools like Twitter. Radio provides more than music; it provides company to someone on a long road trip, or stuck in a cubicle for 8 hours straight.
Gashouse Radio for example (shameless plug) offers a mix of independent music with underplayed mainstream music. We have live DJs for most of the day/evening and also a mix of talk shows on a variety of different topics. And the best part, like most Internet radio stations, it’s FREE!
Now that technology has caught up, Internet radio is easy to to find no matter where you find yourself. Check out my article on Gashouse Radio, How to Listen to Internet Radio, to see just how easy it is to stream in your car, at work, or at home. You no longer have to sit at a desktop in order to listen. And because it is now easier than ever to listen to an Internet station, this is just the beginning for Internet radio.
And with thousands and thousands of stations available, people will start to find a few of their favorites and Internet radio will be a standard. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Pandora, Spotify, or SiriusXM are going anywhere, but Internet radio is a free option that has entertainment options you won’t find anywhere else.
There’s one scary brick wall that Internet radio must be careful to avoid in order to maintain it’s growth. That wall is regulation. With all the talk of SOPA and other Internet regulatory legislation, Internet radio stations could succumb to the same fate as terrestrial radio stations if they are not allowed complete freedom.
Spotify continue to expand, you will see Internet radio become part of the mainstream world of audio entertainment.
